Chamaerops humilis (palmetto or margallon)
Category: Palm trees or palms
Origin: Mediterranean region
Description: Chamaerops humilis is a palm tree between 3-4 m high, branched from the base or sometimes with a single trunk. It is native to southern Europe. It is distributed in North Africa and south-eastern and south-western Europe.
There are different varieties of Chamaerops humilis such as the cultivar "Vulcano", native to the island of Vulcano in Italy, being a very ornamental variant of the common fan palm, with several differences such as the almost entire palmate leaves and the silvery back, fewer thorns and a slightly smaller and more manageable size. Its requirements are the same as those of the normal variety. On the other hand, the cultivar "Cerifera" is very similar in requirements to the Mediterranean fan palm, but more tolerant to both drought and cold, but with the characteristic of its white leaves covered with waxes.
